Environmental
health is the branch of public health that focuses on the relationships between
people and their environment; promotes human health and well-being; and fosters
healthy and safe communities. Environmental health is a key part of any
comprehensive public health system. The field works to advance policies and
programs to reduce chemical and other environmental exposures in air, water,
soil and food to protect people and provide communities with healthier
environments.
**CCPH does not
perform OWTS inspections. Please call the Chaffee County Building Department
for more information or to schedule an inspection.
Chaffee County
Public Health prioritizes environmental health. The following are current
focus areas:
Radon
In Colorado, nearly one out of two per-mitigation home radon tests is above the action limit of 4pCi/L. Existing Chaffee County radon data indicates a median range of home radon levels from 3.8pCi/L - 5.1pCi/L, with 55% of home tests above the action limit of 4pCi/L. Testing your home for radon is the only way to know if you are exposed to harmful levels of radon. CCPH provides free radon test kits, while supplies last. Kits can be picked up at our office in the Touber Building, 448 E. 1st Street, Suite 137.

Lead in drinking water
CCPH is currently assisting
interested child care facilities in testing their drinking water for
lead. Lead in drinking water is dangerous for children. Even though
cities and towns test the water for lead, lead can get into drinking water
through individual pipes underneath homes.
